Sound Design

The analysis about sound design and music tie in quite closely.

However due to the microphone we were using on set not working properly, and because we made the decision to speak on set while filming, Matthew had to make all of the diegetic sounds in post production, alongside Asher.

Matthew used a free sound effect database called Soundly to manage the bulk of the sound effects we needed. If he couldn't find what he was looking for on Soundly, he turned to YouTube, screen recording or MP3 downloading sound effects from there.

The following sound effects were added:

- Fireflies** (0:00 - 0:08)

- Water running*** (0:19 - 0:27, 0:42 - 0:53)

- Floorboard creaking* (0:24, 0:35)

- Couch being sat on* (0:37)

- iPhone typing sounds** (1:00 - 1:05)

- Rising tension sound* (1:08 - 1:16)

- Record player sounds* (1:18 - 1:24)

- Small object hitting floor* (1:25)

- Heavy breathing* (1:30)

Key: * = Soundly, ** = YouTube, *** = Recorded myself.

Soundly is where Matthew sourced most of the sounds, as it is so easy and quick to use. Simply search for the sound you are looking for, and a waveform appears. Then just highlight the part of the waveform you like and drag it into your timeline!
